Glocal Hub Spotlight: Yaoundé Hub

In today’s blog we are uplifting our Yaoundé Hub, based in Cameroon, and woven most notably by Blessing Aghanwing Bisong and Eni Courage Chick.

The Yaoundé Glocal Hub is woven by a team of 7 that engages 24 participants. They are in partnership with The Apostolic Church Obili and Next Big Generation (NBG). They aim to work towards Environmental sustainability through recycling and home gardening as well as skill acquisition for youth.

We asked Blessing, a weaver of this hub, a few questions to hear more about the work happening in Yaoundé. Here's what she had to share:

‍YouthxYouth: "How did the Yaoundé Hub begin?"

Blessing Bisong, Glocal Hub Weaver:

“In January 2023, the Yaoundé Hub was born when a team led by Bechem Ayuk and Kumo Walters rallied over 40 young education activists to reimagine education. They tackled Peace Education which is a pressing issue amid Cameroon’s Anglophone crisis. The group explored what education is, what it could be, and how it can become a force for peace in their communities.”

‍YouthxYouth: "What kind of work has your hub been doing since inception?"

Blessing Bisong, Glocal Hub Weaver:

"We began by working on peace education in the school milieu by educating lecturers and teachers and then we proceeded to promote environmental sustainability by organizing clean up campaigns. We host training and talks for children who are youths and the future of tomorrow. Additionally we play games, relax, and sing in the church compound (Apostolic Church). Our activities mainly take place in schools or church. We believe in a world where every youth can be an agent of change with a purpose."

‍‍YouthxYouth: "What is your hub’s mission?"

Blessing Bisong, Glocal Hub Weaver:

"To create a society of youth who have a passion for learning by making learning and reading of development books interesting and fun. Instead of youth only going to school because our parents obligated us to. To have a society of youths who can individually ensure that they don't litter the environment and who are conscious of environmental protection. Change can't be instantaneous; it begins by changing one person who then spreads the word to others."

‍YouthxYouth: "What work does your hub hope to do in the future?"

Blessing Bisong, Glocal Hub Weaver:

"Our hub has plans of building a community of skillful youth by organising training and workshops. These youth could then do something manually which could be used as a source of income e.g baking, recycling, graphics designing etc. We are also looking towards introducing home gardening and afforestation in the school milieu as a way of promoting environmental sustainability and agriculture. With our partner NBG we are designing a project that targets 3000 children in orphanages in Yaoundé and broader Cameron to provide them with health facilities."

‍YouthxYouth: "If you could offer one piece of advice to all youth activists in Yaoundé, what would it be?"

Blessing Bisong, Glocal Hub Weaver:

"That we shouldn't get discouraged despite challenges because the future is bright. There's hope as long as there's life. Together we can be the difference we want to see. The bible gives us an instruction to go and multiply, we will multiply our impact and influence for the betterment of tomorrow."
